Ingrid Betancourt is FREE.

News article in english.

Article de nouvelles en français.

I`m placing this in my “Heros” category since I believe the people who infiltrated FARC and extracted the hostages without anyone dying, on either side, are heros. Their work wasn’t just a success, it was spectacular. Kudos to all those involved, even if we never hear about you.

Henry Morgentaler and the Order of Canada…

Publié dans Heros le July 1st, 2008

UPDATE:  Nomination confirmed.

OTTAWA — Dr. Henry Morgentaler was named a member of the Order of Canada on Tuesday, an appointment that quickly threw fresh fuel on the bitter abortion debate that raged across the country in the 1970s and ‘80s and has carried on at a slow boil ever since.

While pro-choice groups are hailing the appointment as well-deserved and overdue, it has outraged pro-life activists.

The Governor General is reportedly preparing to name a leading abortion rights crusader to the Order of Canada, news that has outraged anti-abortion groups.

Dr. Henry Morgentaler, who led the fight to legalize abortion in Canada, was supposed to be honoured Monday, but the ceremony has been delayed for unknown reasons, a government source told the Globe and Mail.

The honour, considered the highest in the country, is announced by the Governor General on the advice of an advisory panel.

Conservative MPs on Monday did not directly confirm the news, but stressed that appointments to the order are not made by cabinet. Nine people, including two government appointees, sit on the Order of Canada panel.

I’m a fan of Henry Morgentaler. I am. But keep reading, that’s not all I have to say about it.

I was aware of his right for women’s rights in the 80’s, I saw him in a documentary where I saw him visit the concentration camp where he was held during WWII.

Morgentaler found a cause. As an emergency doctor, he saw young girls come in on Friday nights, victims of botched abortions during a time where it was illegal and not available.

Now on the flip side, my friend Tommy (videos below) is against abortion. He is the second person to influence my opinion on abortion in the sense that PERSONAL RESPONSABILITY comes at the very top of the abortion issue.

I am against abortion because there are many things you can do to prevent pregnancy. But if you are pregnant and you can’t offer that child a good life (ie: want to prevent child abuse) then an abortion should be available. Forever. We shouldn’t question the legality of abortions ever again.

On the other hand, I would suggest looking into neutering morons who have four or five abortions in their lifetime. Abortions are NOT a methode of contracption. You shouldn’t “fall back” on abortion like it was casual. It’s not. You are taking a life, you will remember it always.

You can watch PART II here.

That being said, I highly support the Order of Canada to recognise Henry Morgentaler.

Happy Birthday!

Carlin’s influence

Publié dans Heros le June 24th, 2008

Carlin’s Catholic background accounted for much of his appeal in the Jewish community, Chicago native Warady said.

“I’ve been doing comedy for 20 years,” said Warady. “It’s funny how the Catholics and Jews always related to each other because we were raised with a structure, and as comedians we were always trying to avoid structure… The Protestants do whatever they want. They don’t know what Jews and Catholics go through.”

(…)

Actually, I always thought he was either Arab or Jewish and just changed his name because he was always talking about Jesus in his routines,” Hanania said in an e-mail.

Actually, Carlin told us over and over that religion was bullshit. That religion got us to believe there’s an invisible man in the sky, and he’s watching you. And he’s got a list of things you should never do. And if you do any one of those things, he’s gonna send you to hell to punish you and you will burn and suffer and choke and cry… BUT HE LOVES YOU.

Had I been George Carlin, I would have mentioned that, obviously, the Quran was written by men and NOT inspired by Allah. That the Bible was written by man and NOT inspired by God.

…but the Torah came from G*d. Obviously. No doubt there. Sure…

ADDED:  48 hours after George Carlin’s death, the news of his death finally reaches Google News…

Yesterday, my good friend JIM on youtube had something to say.  Fair Warning:  HE WAS PISSED, as was I.

Shit, George is fucking gone…

Publié dans Heros le June 23rd, 2008

George Carlin died. He was 71 years old.

ROFL. I love that comment on “freedom fighters”… lol So true.

This guy was king. He got some flak during the 70’s… Ah, fuck it. Let’s hear him talk about it.

The next one is probably one of my favorites. George compares Baseball with Football.

Rest in peace, sir.  I’ll miss you.

Can’t punish your kids?

Publié dans Heros le June 19th, 2008
A father plans to appeal after a Quebec court ruled that he didn’t have the right to punish his 12-year-old daughter by banning her from a school trip.

Quebec Superior Court Madam Justice Suzanne Tessier ruled Friday that the girl should be allowed to attend the three-day trip within Quebec this week.

The father first forbade his daughter from going online after the Grade 6 student posted photos on a dating site, the Globe and Mail reported in its Thursday edition. The girl’s parents are divorced, and after she had an alleged row with her stepmother, the dad barred her from going on a school trip to mark the class’s graduation from elementary school, the newspaper says.

“When he said, ‘OK, it’s final. You’re not going,’ she smacked the door, left and went to live with her mother,” the father’s lawyer, Kim Beaudoin, told CBC News.

Last Wednesday, the dad received a motion petitioning the court to overturn the punishment.

Two days later, the justice ruled that the punishment was too severe since the girl had already been sufficiently disciplined, said Beaudoin.

Beaudoin said the justice also said there was no reason for the punishment to stand, since the girl was now living with her mother, even though the father has custody.

Beaudoin said the father, who has four children, was “devastated,” especially since the ruling came days before Father’s Day.

How was she sufficiently punished?  She posted pictures on the internet!  Grade 6, that means she’s 13, maybe 12.

Consequences.  There has to be consequences from bad behaviour.  Telling her not to go on the internet didn’t work.

Having a judge support her bad behaviour will give her the wrong impression.  You can’t always win in real life, you can’t get away with tantrums.

Before someone tells me that the child just went through her parent’s divorce, let me add that posting pictures on an internet dating site is a great place to meet predators.  Please consider that.

I’m with the DAD on this one.  Right on.  He cared enough to put his foot down.  He is the only person who can keep his daughter safe.  He’s been trying to do just that.

Bonne fête des mères…

Publié dans Heros le May 11th, 2008

Happy Mothers Day everyone.

I talk to my mom every week, sometimes twice a week.

It’s the little things that count.  I always feel that I don’t do enough for my mom, but she loves to talk on the phone for hours.

And we usually don’t have too much to say, but neither of us minds.

Not buried here…

Publié dans Heros le May 9th, 2008

Just saw this on LGF.

picture of:  Howard Cain

The leadership of the Germantown Masjid has refused to conduct funeral services for Howard Cain, the bank robber who killed Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski with a Chinese-made semi-automatic rifle.

“No, we will not bury him at Germantown Masjid,” said Tariq El Shabazz, managing director of the mosque. “We don’t want one slight scintilla hinting that we condone his behavior.”

Once upon a time, Frank Zappa debated on tv against censorship based on seven “vulgar” words.

I have come to appreciate words to some extent recently.

Harsh words reveal something very precise.

Pleasant words reveal something very precise.

“WON’T BURY HIM HERE” means something. Actions and the right words that go with the actions.

Right on. Thanks you Mr. Tariq El Shabaz, I applaud your decision although this won’t go too well with parts of the community.

Stand up. Be counted. Thank you.

Happy Birthday ISRAEL!

So what’s the best way to celebrate 60 years of successful survival?
