Toronto and…ROME?

Publié dans Anti-semitism le June 20th, 2008

Click for Google Maps of Rome, NEW YORK.

Over the past week, the National Post has been investigating its own reports of an intelligence-led investigation of Hezbollah activities in Canada, including activity focused on the Ontario border cities of Windsor and Niagara Falls.

Those under suspicion include men who were overseas in the summer of 2006 to fight with Hezbollah during the renewed conflict with Israel in Lebanon.

There has indeed been chatter — references to various bits of intelligence picked up by various security sources — that attacks should be carried out against Jewish targets in Canada and abroad, the Post has learned.

The Jewish communities in Toronto and Rome were mentioned as possible or desirable targets. That does not mean an attack is imminent or a specific attack has been mapped out.

When asked on Tuesday about the Hezbollah threats, Stockwell Day, the Public Safety Minister, confirmed that Canadian authorities were keeping an eye on the organization, which is listed as an outlawed terrorist group under Canadian law.

“It’s something that’s watched,” Mr. Day said.

The City of Rome (New York State) is roughly located halfway between Montreal and Toronto, just south-south-west of Adirondak Park.

ROME, NY on Wikipedia.

Rome is a city in Oneida County, New York, United States. The population was 34,950 at the 2000 census. It is in New York’s 24th congressional district. The city is named after the Italian city of Rome. It is sometimes nicknamed “The Copper City” on account of the brass and copper works founded by Paul Revere in 1801.

Now, I’m guessing that any terrorist organisation who mentions “Rome” means the historical city in Italy, where the Vatican is located.

And I’ve mentioned this before here (Robert Spencer video), then again here and here (MEMRI TV videos).

Now if I look back at the National Post article, page 2

Bernie Farber, chief executive of the Canadian Jewish Congress, said an alert is being sent to Jewish cultural institutions and synagogues.

“We will ensure that everyone is aware and remind everyone that you never let your guard down, because we, as a community, just can’t do that,” Mr. Farber said.

“What we have been told is that there is nothing specific to Canada. That’s what we have been told. Yes, there is chatter. We don’t have anything to suggest there is any significant change in terms of imminence. There are some mixed messages but the bottom line is: We’re aware, our security is aware and we will keep an eye out.”

Er…This is a Jew, talking about the Jewish community?

What about us?  Rome is mentioned and we don’t pay attention?

Call me paranoid, but I think I’m being threatened too.  More than that, I don’t even want to see this as a threat towards Jews, it’s a threat to all of us.

Members of my society are being threatened.  Isn’t my society taking notice? I guess not.

Flawed data?

Publié dans Anti-semitism le June 9th, 2008
OTTAWA - A new report that shows blacks and Jews are most likely to be the victims of hate crimes in Canada is flawed, according to the leader of the Canadian Islamic Congress.

The Statistics Canada study, released on Monday, relies mostly on research by the Canadian Centre for Justice Statistics and uses police-reported data on the race, religion and sexual orientation of victims of hate-motivated incidents, ranging from property crimes to violent crimes.

In 2006, police services for 87 per cent of the Canadian population reported 892 hate crimes. Of the 220 hate crimes reported by police to be motivated by religion, offences against Jews were the most common, accounting for 63 per cent. Crimes against Muslims accounted for 21 per cent, while crimes against Catholics accounted for six per cent.

Mohamed Elmasry, national president of the congress, said hate crimes against Muslims are often misfiled by police because it’s difficult to question someone’s religion, thus skewing the numbers.

“A Somali family who reports a hate crime, they might put it under black when it’s supposed to be under Muslim,” said Elmasry. “That Somali family should be under Muslim and not under black, because the motivation is really because the woman is wearing a hijab.

“It is easier for the hate crime unit to put the report under black because it’s a visible minority.”

Elmasry said his community saw a rise in hate-related incidences after 9/11 and the numbers in the report don’t reflect the Muslim reality.

That may be.  But perhaps anti-semite crimes have also gone up.  Had you considered that?

Either way, I’m getting the impression that, according to the Canadian Islamic Congress, anyone who doesn’t put “islamophobia” on top of every list of problems has flawed data.

Victimhood is their bread and butter.

Anti-Semitism in Canada…

Publié dans Anti-semitism le April 10th, 2008
In its annual audit, the League for Human Rights of B’nai Brith Canada says there were 1,042 anti-Semitic incidents reported in 2007, 11.4 per cent more than in 2006.

B’nai Brith says there were just 250 incidents reported in 1998.

The group’s executive director, Frank Dimant, says anti-Semitism - once largely confined to urban centres - appears to be increasing in rural areas.

The group says the upward trend of anti-Semitic incidents in Canada is at odds with reports from some other large Jewish communities worldwide.

It says such incidents declined eight per cent in Britain last year, 13 per cent in the United States and 31 per cent in France.

The report says the number of anti-Semitic incidents rose 28.8 per cent in Quebec last year, to 291; 128.6 per cent in Saskatchewan, to 16; and 2.3 per cent in Ontario, to 582.

They dropped by 37.8 per cent, to 28, in Alberta - the only province to record a decline.

Allan Adel, chairman of B’nai Brith’s League for Human Rights, noted the spike in Quebec incidents was especially high in November, when a commission was in the midst of oft-contentious hearings into the province’s struggles accommodating immigrants.

Adel says the hearings have “unleashed latent feelings of anti-Semitism amongst Quebecers.”

“Particularly chilling is the pattern of retaliation we have witnessed against individuals who have come forward to denounce acts of racism, and in the process have become targets themselves,” he said.

“When one victim is targeted for hate, an entire community is victimized as well. This form of intimidation is intended to silence the victims, perpetuating the problem of under-reporting and distorting the true magnitude of the problem.”

The group says the FBI’s Hate Crime Statistics Report found anti-Jewish bias was behind 967 of the 1,462 anti-religion hate crimes reported in the United States in 2006. The next closest group was the Muslim community, where 156 cases involved an anti-Islamic bias.

“This mirrors police findings in Canada as well,” says the B’nai Brith report.

The group says 699 of the 1,042 incidents reported in Canada last year involved harassment, 315 involved vandalism, and 28 involved violence.

What can I say?  Anti-semitism is against the law, but since we’re a multicultural democracy bent on loving everybody, we can’t even oppose anti-semites.

Anti-semitism is everywhere in Quebec.  It’s right there, just barely under the surface.  Support for “palestine” is too tempting for all those who don’t want to seem “racist”.  It’s a (disgusting) way of life.

He was born in 1924 in Ukraine, then part of the Soviet Union, and began work as a guard in the Nazi SD after the German occupation.

He moved to Canada after the war, claiming to be from Estonia, and found employment as a mill worker in Vancouver, where he raised a family and lived until he was arrested at Italy’s request in 2002.

Justice?  Non.

QUEL BONHEUR!!!

Canada will not support preparations for a UN anti-racism conference planned for Durban, South Africa, next year. The government claims the previous meeting in 2001 turned into an embarrassing promotion of racist attitudes.

“(The conference) turned into a bit of a circus for intolerance and bigotry, particularly but not exclusively directed at the Jewish people,” Conservative MP Jason Kenney, the government’s secretary of state for multiculturalism, told CTV’s Mike Duffy Live.

He added that “Hitler posters (were displayed) by NGOs that have been re-invited by the organizing committee now chaired by Libya.”

The NDP said Canada needs to be at the table in Durban.

“I think Canada needs to be there even if we bring a different perspective and can say something differently than other people in the world,” said British Columbia MP Bill Siksay.

Siksay added that the Conservative government should not abandon its traditional commitment to multilateralism.

The 2001 World Conference Against Racism in Durban highlighted divisions between the developing and developed world. It also showed the seething anger in much of the Arab world against Zionism, the international movement that helped establish Israel.

Some countries, notably Pakistan and Syria, had wanted to state in a declaration that Israel’s “foreign occupation” had given rise to racism in the Middle East. The U.S. and Israel alleged anti-Semitism was behind much of the anti-Israel rhetoric. They walked out in protest.

But African governments complained at the last conference that Western governments had chosen to highlight treatment of the Israeli issue as if it was the only one on the agenda.

South Africa, the host country, stopped short of calling U.S. President George Bush a racist, saying instead that he was not “anti-racist.” Other African countries were upset that Britain and the West refused to overtly apologize for their support of centuries of slavery.

Last month, a prominent Israeli newspaper reported that Israeli diplomats were working behind the scenes to convince the Europeans, the U.S., and “like-minded” countries such as Canada, to boycott and even de-fund the conference.

B’nai Brith Canada and the Canadian Jewish Congress praised Canadian officials for pulling their support for the conference.

source.

So do I!
