Ted Bird’s commentary…
I have to give credit to Ted Bird, CHOM-FM’s morning man and sports commentator, for seeing the issue instead of the simple story being pushed on the news.
Mr.Bird thinks that painting the Habs Logo on the firestation is simply to side against Tremblay in a tense union negociation that has been going on for years. He also mentions that if he was ever in a tragic situation, he would hope not to see decorative flags on the police cruiser or the fire engine. The flags would be absurd given the bereavement felt and thus he sees this as “unprofessional” on the part of city employees.
Agreed. I understand that point completely, although you’d still be getting the same professional service with or without the flags. These guys are professionals.
From my point of view, if we had a collective tragedy like Columbine, let’s say, and we had fire trucks with banners saying “WE ARE COLUMBINE”, then I assume that no one would disapprove. It’s in this line of thinking that I approve the Habs Logo on a firestation because horrible events are NOT the only issues that bring people together. It shouldn’t be.
This joy of seeing young players on the ice who have what it takes to make it to the Cup and win, although it’s futile and absurd in a life-or-death perspective, is bringing people together and we are all aware of it.
Employees hindering their efficiency or dammaging their equipement is worth prosecution.
Defacing a building with a specific message felt by the whole community is worth every dollar we spend on promoting tourism in Montreal. Because it’s real.
I’m Red Collar.
You can read Ted Bird’s blog here, it’s always worth reading.
